Effective treatment of lower back pain (Lumbago)

Lower back pain

We treat low back pain (lumbago), with a focus on removing the cause and not just treating the symptoms. The treatment starts with talking through your history and identifying imbalances in your body that can cause back pain. We then remove these imbalances so that in the long run you will experience fewer problems.

At Brændgaard Physiotherapy, we have extensive experience in relieving back pain, both those you get for the first time and those you have had several times.

What is low back pain?

Pain in the lower back can also be called Lumbago, witches' shot, facet joint syndrome, lumbar locking or low back pain. The pain typically occurs acutely, but can also come on insidiously. The back is typically so locked that it is difficult to move it. However, we recommend always moving within the pain limit. Pain in the lower back typically goes away after some time, but often comes back. It is therefore important to find the cause, in order to prevent future lower back pain.

Are you misalligned in your body?

You may see that your posture is affected e.g. that your upper body is shifted to one side. This happens because your brain tenses the muscules and then your body naturally assumes a position where there is less noise from the nervoussystem and thereby compensates for the cause of the back pain. This may result in you haveing pain when moving or have so much pain that movement seems unmanageable. If it is the first time you have lower back pain, it can be scary and confusing, but there is a solution.

That's why the treatment works

Our experience is that Lumbago/low back pain is a symptom of a cause elsewhere in the body. When this or these causes are removed, the pain disappears. This sometimes happens spontaneously during a treatment, but most times it requires a few treatments. This is why the treatment method P-DTR works well for back pain, as people after treatment not only experience less pain, but also experience less lumbago/cricks in the lower back.

A case from the clinic

A client came in with lower back pain and walked completely stiff, to protect her lower back and prevent pain from the area. She had reduced movement and was afraid that something was seriously wrong. Her doctor had ruled out a prolapsed disc, but she was still scared. After the first treatment, mobility was better in the back, the pain had subsided and she was no longer afraid.

We treat your lumbago quickly and efficiently.

This is how P-DTR works

We treat your nervous system, as pain is typically a response to compensation elsewhere in the body. The brain processes impressions from the nervous system and responds to them. If the brain is misinformed, it can create inappropriate movement patterns that give you pain and wrong positions in the body. There are no manipulations of the joints as part of the treatment and you will typically be able to feel the effect after the first treatment.

The structure of the back

The back is made up of 7 cervical vertebrae, 12 thoracic vertebrae and 5 lumbar vertebrae. In between all the vertebrae is a disc that consists of a soft core and a hard rim around it. The vertebrae have a spinousi, which is a bony projection that can be felt at the back of the back and is more prominent in some people than others. On each vertebra there are also two transverse bony parts that points out to the sides and on the 12 thoracic vertebrae the ribs attach to these. Many different muscles attach to the vertebrae, which help to create movement and stability of the joints. Between each of the vertebrae, there are small ligaments which, among other things, provide information to the brain about the location of the joint. There are many muscles that can easily become unbalanced and cause pain or lumbago.

The boring facts

Back pain is very common among the Danish population, where approx. 60-80% have experienced back pain one or more times. According to www.sundhed.dk, 80-90% of all back pain is harmless and is caused by a lumbago. In only 10% of cases it is due to nerve root pain radiating below the knee, which is most often due to a prolapse or narrow nerve root canal. The last 1-5% are due to rare diseases such as rheumatic disease, a fracture or a tumor. Below you can read more about some of the causes of lumbago.

Lumbago and a crick in the back

Lumbago or a crick in the lower back is typically an acute locking in the joints of the spine and can be located in the lower back or higher up in the back. A crick in the back will make the muscles around the area tense up. The tense musculature prevents movement in an attempt to protect the area and not cause further damage. It typically occurs with a heavy lift or a twist in the spine, but can also occur for no immediate reason. It can be really painful, but once the worst pain has subsided, it is important to move as much as the body allows.

Facet joint syndrome/Locking

A locking or facet joint syndrome is when there is increased tension in the ligaments or muscles between the spinous or transverse processes of two vertebrae, which typically restrict movement. This is typically less invasive than a lumbago.
All the joints, ligaments and muscles around the spine are the reason why you can easily get locks in the neck, middle of the back or in the lower back. The locks will prevent natural movement and, with several years of locking, affect other joints in the body due to the lack of natural movement of the back.
There is no manipulation involved in treating the locks and you feel immediate improvement.

Scoliosis

If there is an imbalance in the pelvis, head or in between, it can typically be seen on the spine as a scoliosis. A scoliosis is an S-shaped curve in the vertebrae, it can cause discomfort, but is harmless and actually a symptom of an imbalance elsewhere in the body. You may have pain in your back or lower back due to scoliosis, as the biomechanics around the spine change.

Herniated disc

A disc in the spine consists of a soft core surrounded by a hard rim. Is there a bulge on the hard edge (protrusion) or a hole in the hard edge (disc prolapse), there may be pressure on the nerve pathways and you may feel tingling and buzzing in the arms or legs, depending on the location.
If there are symptoms in the buttocks and legs, it can also be due to pressure on the sciatic nerve, which is called
sciatica pain or that there is pressure on the nerve due to narrow conditions for the spinal cord or spinal nerves, called spinal stenosis.

We treat all pain related to the lower back.
