Effective treatment of disc herniation

A protrusion/prolapsed disc presses on the nerve roots close to the spine and can cause symptoms locally in the lower back or neck and radiate down the legs or out into the arms.

We believe that a protrusion/prolapsed disc occurs due to muscular imbalance around the spine. Your core is formed by your back, stomach, diaphragm and pelvic floor. An imbalance in these muscles will affect the stability around the vertebrae and inappropriately increase the pressure on the disc. It is our experience that by achieving balance in the core muscles, the pain can be alleviated.

We treat with the newest techniques, which gives you a effective treatment and pain relief.

Symptoms

A herniated disc most often occurs in the lower back and can cause pain in the lower back, nerve radiation and sensory disturbance to the buttocks and legs or reduced strength to one or both legs. However, this can also be caused by pressure the sciatic nerve in the buttocks, why you do not necessarily have a prolapsed disc even if you have the above symptoms. Read more about muscle imbalance further down the page.

A disc herniation/protrusion can also occur in the neck and cause symptoms in the neck and out into the arm(s), but is not as frequent as in the lower back.To clarify whether it is a herniated disc or nerve pressure, it is important to examine the body and clarify where the symptoms are coming from. The first treatment therefore consists of a conversation about your history and problems, an examination and, based on this, treatment.

Nerve pressure vs. muscular imbalance

There is a disc between all the vertebrae and the symptom areas are different depending on which level in the spine the nerve pressure is on. Therefore, the symptoms will be the same, but may fluctuate in intensity depending on what you are doing. If your pain is more diffuse and shifts from the front to the back of the leg or arm, it is muscles pressing on the nerves.

Protrusion vs. Diskusprolaps

A disc is made up of a soft core surrounded by a ring of fibers that form a harder edge. With a protrusion, the soft center is pushed out and pushes against the hard edge so that it makes a bulge that can press on the nerve. In the case of a herniated disc, the pressure on the soft center has been so great that it has broken through the hard edge. The disc's purpose is to absorb shock and create joints between the vertebrae, as well as to provide flexibility in the spine.

Who has herniated discs

Studies with MRI scans of people without back pain have shown that many had a hernieated disc without symptoms. Thus, there is not always a correlation between having a discus prolapse and pain. The pain of a herniated disc can also vary greatly depending on where and how it presses on the nerve root. With a herniated disc, the body will begin to heal itself immediately and you will therefore be able to experience improvements naturally and without treatment. However, it is daunting to have radiating pain to the legs and can be reassuring to consult a physical therapist.

It can be debilitating pain associated with a herniated disc/protrusion and collaboration with your own doctor on painkillers is therefore recommended in combination with the treatment.

If you experience disturbances in your urination, defecation or sexual function, it is important that you contact your doctor immediately.
